Notes on each row

  • Commonwealth Bank. Other is the balance of overseas FTE outside Australia, New Zealand and India.
  • ANZ. ANZ does not publish India as a separate line. Its audited regional data groups India with Europe, the Americas and the Middle East in a region it calls EAMEI, which totalled 9,745 at 30 September 2025. The 9,000 shown here is from a September 2026 statement by ANZ's chief executive, so it is later than and not part of the FY2025 figures. Asia Pacific covers ANZ's Asian operations and its Pacific franchises including Fiji and Papua New Guinea. The EAMEI remainder is EAMEI less the 9,000 stated for India.
  • NAB. Total workforce including fixed term, casual and external contractors was 50,971 at 30 September 2025. NAB reported group FTE of 41,880 on the same date. NAB publishes geographic splits as percentages of permanent headcount only, with no country figures. Asia was 11.5% of 38,632 permanent colleagues, which is about 4,443 people, and that figure covers India, Vietnam and NAB's Asian institutional offices together. The Australian figure here is derived the same way: 73.3% of 38,632. Percentages of permanent headcount as at 30 September 2025.
  • Westpac. Headcount by location sums to 35,526 across the four regions shown below. Westpac separately discloses 35,548 direct employees and 1,132 contractors at 30 September 2025. Group FTE was 35,236. Westpac's annual report and its list of controlled entities contain no reference to India, and its modern slavery statement lists the nine countries where it directly employs people without India or the Philippines among them. That statement places India and the Philippines in its indirect workforce, meaning people employed by outsourced providers rather than by Westpac. Pacific covers Fiji, Papua New Guinea and other Pacific operations. International offices covers Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States, China and Germany.

Year by year, bank by bank

Each bank below is shown on its own measure and its own reporting date. The four series are not directly comparable; the definitions section sets out why.

Commonwealth Bank: FTE by location

Full-time equivalents as at 30 June each year. CBA is the only one of the four that reports India as its own line.

The location split is marked in CBA's annual report as not assured by PwC, unlike the rest of its sustainability metrics. Headcount was 55,308 at 30 June 2026.

ANZ: employees by region

Employee headcount as at 30 September each year. EAMEI groups Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and India, so India is not separable from this table.

FY2021FY2022FY2023FY2024FY2025

EAMEI (Europe, America, Middle East and India)7,3487,6078,3499,0199,745

These are employees. ANZ's remaining workforce is made up of contingent workers, which its modern slavery statement puts at about 21% of its total workforce; they carry no geographic split. Group FTE was 42,698 at 30 September 2025. The FY2025 rise in Australian headcount reflects a full year of Suncorp Bank, acquired on 1 July 2024.

NAB: group FTE and workforce composition

NAB publishes group FTE by period but geographic splits only as percentages of permanent headcount, for FY2025 alone.

NAB: geographic distribution

NAB publishes its geographic split as a percentage of permanent headcount for FY2025 only, with no country figures. The implied headcount shows those percentages applied to the 38,632 permanent colleagues NAB reported at 30 September 2025.

Definitions and limits

  • Three different measures. CBA reports full-time equivalents, which convert part-time hours into whole roles. ANZ and Westpac report employee headcount, where each person counts once regardless of hours. NAB publishes geographic splits for permanent headcount only. A headcount figure will be higher than the FTE figure for the same workforce.
  • Different year ends. CBA's financial year ends 30 June, so its FY2026 figures are nine months later than the FY2025 figures for ANZ, NAB and Westpac. CBA's FY2025 column is included so the series can be compared period for period.
  • Contractors are outside most of these numbers. NAB's 10,004 external, temporary and contractor colleagues are counted in its group FTE of 41,880 but excluded from its geographic percentages. Westpac reports 1,132 contractors separately from its headcount by location. ANZ's contingent workers, about 21% of its total workforce, are excluded from its employees and carry no geographic split.
  • Outsourced providers are outside all of them. None of the four discloses how many people work on its behalf inside an outsourced or business process provider. Westpac's modern slavery statement identifies India, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand as the main locations of its indirect workforce without quantifying any of them.
  • Two figures here are derived. NAB's implied country headcounts are its published percentages applied to its published permanent headcount; NAB does not publish the absolute figures. ANZ's 9,000 for India is a statement by its chief executive in September 2026, not part of its audited FY2025 regional data, and ANZ's EAMEI remainder is that region less the 9,000.
  • One series is unaudited in part. CBA marks its FTE by location as not assured by PwC, unlike the rest of the sustainability metrics in its annual report.
  • Annual snapshots, not a live series. These figures come from annual reports and sustainability data packs. They do not update with the daily rate data on the leaderboard. This page was last checked against its sources on 21 Oct 2026.
